South African soprano Pumeza Matshikiza had her first experience of opera not in a gilded opera house, but when she happened to change the radio dial from a Xhosa-language station to one playing classical music.

It was a broadcast of The Marriage of Figaro, and Matshikiza — then a girl growing up in Khayelitsha, one of the townships of Cape Town — fell in love with the sound of soprano Edith Mathis.

“I was just transfixed,” she said. “I thought, ‘What language are they singing in, how can people sing like this — are they angels?’”

Matshikiza would go on to win a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London, join the young artist program at the Royal Opera, and be hired by the Stuttgart State Opera. She is making her first visit to Australia this week to promote her album Arias and to sing at a fundraising dinner in Sydney tonight for the Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Foundation, which supports young singers. “When I started studying opera, I didn’t dream of anything,” she said. “I was just driven by the curiosity of how the human voice works to produce these beautiful sounds.”

Matshikiza is now embarking on a freelance career. She will sing in Porgy and Bessat Milan’s La Scala in November."
