Rolando Villazón

Rolando Villazón is among the most versatile artists alive today, maintaining successful careers as a stage director, novelist, and TV personality next to his on-stage career. His singularly beautiful voice and arresting stage presence have prompted critics to hail him as “better than ever before…the sound of his voice is phenomenal…few tenors of such vocal power can shape such pianissimi” (Süddeutsche Zeitung) and “his artistry as astonishing as ever, fusing sound, sense and gesture in an uncompromising quest for veracity” (The Guardian).

  • Rolando Villazón sets off on a European concert tour, performing art songs by Giuseppe Verdi, Gaetano Donizetti, Gioachino Rossini, and Vincenzo Bellini with the Nuevo Mundo Chamber Orchestra. Rolando begins in Baden-Baden, where he gives an Gala Concert at the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus on March 30. He continues his tour in France, where he and the Orchestra perform at the newly restored Opéra Royal at Versailles (April 2). From there, they head to Munich (April 5), Vienna (April 10), and cap off their tour in Prague (April 13).

For Rolando, "[t]o explore these Lieder is comparable to studying the lesser known paintings of the great artists. They tend to be forgotten only because the larger paintings are considerably more famous. These seemingly smaller works, these sketches, are exceptional works in themselves and deserve just as much attention." Rolando's performances with the Nuevo Mundo Chamber Orchestra take a new approach to this repertoire: instead of piano accompaniment, these bel canto treasures will be performed with orchestral arrangements composed specifically for this tour.
