Rolando Villazón

Rolando Villazón is among the most versatile artists alive today, maintaining successful careers as a stage director, novelist, and TV personality next to his on-stage career. His singularly beautiful voice and arresting stage presence have prompted critics to hail him as “better than ever before…the sound of his voice is phenomenal…few tenors of such vocal power can shape such pianissimi” (Süddeutsche Zeitung) and “his artistry as astonishing as ever, fusing sound, sense and gesture in an uncompromising quest for veracity” (The Guardian).

  • On July 8, 11 and 14, Rolando Villazón sings Papageno opposite Regula Mühlemann's Papagena in Die Zauberflöte. The performances will be recorded by Deutsches Grammophon as part of the 2018 Baden-Baden Gala. The rest of the cast features Franz-Josef Selig as Sarastro, Christiane Karg as Pamina, Klaus Florian Vogt as Tamino and Albina Shagimuratova as the Queen of the Night. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts.

Performed in collaboration with Deutsche Grammophon, the concert will be recorded as part of the Mozart cycle—a long-term project to release Mozart’s seven mature operas. Made possible by the generous support of ROLEX, the Mozart cycle also includes the previously released Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Le Nozze di Figaro, as well as La clemenza di Tito, which will be released on July 6.

He then pairs with frequent collaborator Carrie-Ann Matheson for three recital performances of Canciones Populares: entre el viejo y el nuevo mundo. Featuring music from Spain and Latin America, the evening includes works by Manuel de Falla, Federico Mompou, Fernando Obradors, Carlos Gustavino, and Silvestre Revueltas. Rolando performs the program on July 18 at Munich Opera Festival, July 21 at Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, and August 7 at the Salzburg Festival.

On August 26, Rolando performs at Vaduz Classic in an open-air concert of opera and operetta’s greatest hits. He is joined by soprano Louise Alder and the Sinfonieorchester Liechtenstein under the baton of Guerassim Voronkov.

Rolando closes the summer season on August 31, performing “A Night at the Opera” with Louise Alder at Kurpark Classix. The program features the great hits of opera and operetta, including works by Gounod, Bellini, Lehár, and Bernstein. Christopher Ward conducts the Sinfonieorchester Aachen.
